Province

Almería is a province in southern Spain, bordering the provinces of Granada and Murcia and the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital is the city of Almería. There is an international airport in Almería, and those of Granada, Murcia and Alicante are also nearby. The province of Almería enjoys the delights of the Mediterranean and a subtropical climate; warm and dry practically all year round. Almería is known as the region of Andalusia with the highest number of hours of sunshine per year – over 3,000! The mild climate, all year round, makes this region a perfect holiday destination at any time of year. The natural beaches, sand dunes, tiny fishing villages and headlands, all overlooking the Mediterranean Sea and the coastline, are breathtaking. The area is one of the most ecologically rich coastal regions on the western coast and is perfect for walkers, nature lovers and birdwatchers. The coastline is approximately 214 km long, accounting for around 25 per cent of the Andalusian coastline. Despite Almería’s arid climate, it is an important agricultural area – producing some 250 million kilos of flowers and crops each year. The quality of the fruit and vegetables is excellent. The province of Almería is renowned for its fish and seafood dishes, with squid and red prawns being particularly characteristic. Other typical dishes include stews, migas (fried bread with garlic and spicy sausage) and plenty of grilled fish.
